FLL Rising Stars!

This was our first year in First Lego League, so we had no idea what to expect when we started the season. The plan was to learn how to build a robot, program it, learn about climate and have fun!

The season started on September 5, and our team was able to meet once a week for about 2 hours. We tried to split the work up during each meeting, with some focused on research and some on building or programming. We made sure to rotate the work, so everyone got a chance to experience every aspect of the project. We also attended a Rookie Booster event, which helped get us on the right track and build some confidence.

The Regional Qualifier tournament was held yesterday at Monarch High School. It was a blast! There were 24 teams, so it was a very active place. It was fun to talk to the other teams about their experiences and see all of the different designs to accomplish the same tasks. The boys were a little nervous at the beginning, but they acted with gracious professionalism and most importantly: had fun!

Thankfully, our first competition run was absolutely perfect for the tasks we had programmed. We scored 120 points and, too our complete amazement, were in first place for the first 2 rounds! Our 2nd and 3rd rounds had some alignment issues, so our scores were considerably lower. Since they take the best of three rounds, our first round kept us in 5th place!

We were even more surprised during the award ceremony, the judges awarded our team with the FLL Rising Stars award! From the FLL site, this award is given to "teams that the judges notice and believe will soon be among the best and the brightest. The Rising Star Award recognizes a team that the judges believe stands out and that we expect great things from in future Challenges." Of particular mention, the judges thought our use of our robot arm and captured buoy to activate the storm mission was particularly innovative.

I'm very proud of our Hurricane Buster Bots team: David, Connor, Drew and Caleb. I look forward to next year!

Star Wars Lego II trailer!

StarWars.com and LucasArts have released the trailer for the new Star Wars Lego II video game! You can view it at: http://download.lucasarts.com/legoswii_480.mov

The original Star Wars Lego game is a ton of fun, and my kids and I played the game together for hours! The controls are simple enough that kids can actually play, and it's entertaining for both Star Wars and Lego fans.

Check it out!

Good things come to those who wait/blog!

I'm glad my wife reads my blog, too.

When I got home from New York, my wife and sons surprised me with a copy of Star Wars Lego: The Video Game! Not only that, but the game comes with a free ticket to Episode III!

We played the game together Saturday morning, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I'd read some good reviews, but for my 6 and 3 year olds to be able to play the game, and for it to have all the Star Wars and Lego quality I wanted, this will be my favorite PS2 game of all.

The game has a lot of extra features to replay with different characters and build custom lego models in the game! It has a high Star Wars and Lego nerd quotient. If you are either type of these nerds, you must get this game!

The other cool thing to come out on Saturday, was the Episode III collection of Lego sets. I was quite restrained, limiting myself to only 4 of the coolest sets:

More than anything, I'm out of room in my office, and I don't know where to put the new models... I'm going to have to get some of those expandable shelves from Home Depot or Organized Living!

I also let the boys pick out 1 toy of their choice. My oldest chose the Darth Vader Voice Changer Helmet, and my youngest the Clone Trooper Blaster Rifle. I had suggested the Anakin and Obi-Wan starfighters, but they wanted something with cool sound effects.

All I could say was, "Impressive, most impressive." My wife just rolled her eyes...

The Dark Side of New York

I'm in New York again this week, and I can't believe I missed this: http://www.starwars.com/episode-iii/release/promo/news20050329.html

The event was at 11am, and I was in meetings from 9am-6pm. Doh. Oh well, if New York was going to have a Dark Side, I'm glad this was it!

For more Dark Side fun, check out: http://www.mms.com/us/mpire/ The Boba Fett M&M figure is cool, too.

In other Star Wars news, it looks like the Star Wars Lego game is out! It's gotten pretty good reviews, too: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/599/599286p1.html?fromint=1

I was going to ask for it as an Easter present, but it wasn't out yet. Instead, I got the Buck Rogers series on DVD!

I'll have to ask for the Star Wars game for some other occasion (for me or my boys!)

USS Enterprise in bricks

One of my favorite Christmas presents this year: the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 D from MegaBlocks!

I'm really hoping they come out with a Klingon Bird of Prey next!

One of the other MegaBlocks sets I've been really impressed with is the USAF A-10 Thunderbolt (it's in my office at work...)

And now, what you've been waiting for, the pics:

UCS Y-Wing under the radar

Wow, this one snuck up on me.

Theforce.net reported today that the UCS Y-Wing Starfighter is now available from the Lego Shop. I checked, and it's running $119 to preorder for Nov 2004 delivery.

I hadn't visited the trusty FBTB.net, and now I'm really sorry. They broke this story back on September 25. FBTB please set up an RSS feed! I'm hooked on Bloglines to get all my news now :-)

The UCS Snowspeeder is also a very cool model, but nothing tops building the UCS Star Destroyer!

Star Destroyer: Build Complete!

This is a follow-up to my Father's Day present post.

After 225 pages of instructions, 3104 lego pieces, and 24 hours of build time, the Star Destroyer is finally complete!

I have to say it is my favorite piece in my collection, and you aren't a true Star Wars Lego fan without one.

Here are some final pics!

Elevated view. This thing is at least 3 feet long!

Side view. Check out the detail on the sides and tower!

Rear view. The engines are incredible.

Re-enactment of the Falcon chase in Empire Strikes Back. Wish I had enough to make a Super Star Destroyer...

LEGO Star Wars Video Game

LEGO Star Wars Video Game

The Official Star Wars website reported that Giant Interactive Entertainment and Traveller's Tales will be creating a Star Wars action-adventure video game using the Star Wars Lego universe!

I'm a HUGE fan and collector of the Star Wars Lego series. In fact, I think I'm missing only about ten sets. For a complete list of available sets, check out my favorite Star Wars Lego website: From Bricks To Bothans (fbtb.net)

Along those lines, here's the latest update on my Star Destroyer build (pics to follow later):
current build time: 20 hours
estimated time to completion: 4 hours
I've got the main body and engines complete. Now it's a matter of finishing the main tower...

Who is Scotty?

To describe the image: I love Lego, Boba Fett, was married in a kilt, and have always wanted to be an astronaut. They didn't have an image of a tornado on reasonablyclever.com, or I'd have added that too. Sure, it's weird, but I'm reasonably complex. :-)

I've lived in Colorado all my life. Some on a ranch in southeastern Colorado, some in Fort Collins (while at CSU), but most of it in Colorado Springs, and now Boulder/Denver.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 3 kids, church, and storm chasing!

I've worked at Sun for almost 9 years now, in a variety of roles.

If you want the specifics in my Curriculum Vitae, check out my profile on LinkedIn.

Basically, I started out as a technical writer and document conversion specialist for SunSoft at the Rocky Mountain Technology Center in Colorado Springs, CO using a SUN4/50 SparcStation IPX. I worked on various products including Solstice Backup, Solstice Job Scheduler, Solstice AdminSuite, and the Solaris 2.4 and 2.5 Administration Guides.

After the Broomfield, CO campus was built, the folks at RMTC were relocated and the site shut down. Some moved to the Bay area, some to Burlington, MA, and some lucky folks rigged it so they could stay in the Springs.

I got a job as the webmaster for Sun Educational Services, which relocated to the new Broomfield, CO campus. I worked in that group for 3 years, with only 1 manager (my most stable position at Sun). My desktop was an Ultra 2, and was one of the easiest boxes to swap out hardware for. Our webserver was hosted on an E450, also a beautiful machine.

Looking for new opportunities, I moved over to SunSolve.Sun.COM to work on the next-generation features of the site. We tried to move the site to be XML-based, until the net bubble burst.I got upgraded to an Ultra 60 for my desktop, which I used until June 2004.

I've worked on various XML-based projects since, in a variety of sub-organizations in Sun Services, including content management, metadata management, and knowledge management. I'm also proud to work on the OASIS DocBook Technical Committee, along with Steve Cogorno and the great Norm Walsh (both from Sun). I also greatly respect the other members of the DocBook TC, who are very active in the DocBook and technical writing community.

My favorite project to date at Sun, has been working on the Sun System Handbook. It's got the best information on supporting Sun hardware, and a great team of folks to work on it.

Now I'm on a SunRay with remote access to a dedicated blade on a SunFire B1600 in a lab. This setup is working pretty well, so far.

I'm not sure what the future holds, but I hope it continues to be bright here at Sun!

Happy Father's Day (early)

My family and I were walking through the Colorado Mills outlet mall, and I begged to stop by the Lego outlet store, and I saw it...

I've been drooling over this set since it was first released. My wife said, "I was going to order this on the Lego site for you anyways for Father's Day, so let's go ahead and get it. This way we don't have to pay shipping!"

Not having to pay shipping is a very good thing. This set weighs as much as a small child!

I was able to show considerable restraint in front of my children by not jumping up and down, but I am an extremely happy man! The set was too big to fit in a bag, so I had to carry it through the mall like a very proud papa.

Interestingly enough, every male in the mall turned their heads to check it out. Most mumbled something about "is that for you, or for your kids?" My silly grin says it all...

[*] Jumpgate opens...

I've just taken my first foray into the blogosphere. Feels pretty good.

I've been surfing blogs for quite a while, mostly Norm Walsh's excellent blog, Slashdot, XML.COM, and more recently Wil Wheaton Dot Net.

My professional interests lie primarily in DocBook, XML, XSLT and Storm Chasing , though not necessarily in that order.

My wife always comments that I have too many hobbies, which include: weather photography, aircraft modeling, HO-gauge railroading, 25mm miniature painting, French Horn, Bass guitar, Playstation2, Star Wars Lego.

This in addition to time with my kids, wife and Church.

I'll be categorizing a lot of my posts based on the professional interests, but will throw in some hobby posts from time to time.
